Sandpoint Byway Tour - October 25, 2011

The ISPE Sandpoint Byway Tour was exciting to see the (almost) final product of a large construction project in Northern Idaho. It was interesting to see all of the construction elements that took place for this project, including structures, roadways, pedestrian pathways, and environmental. Innovative construction activities included the use of lightweight fill to eliminate settlement of surrounding structures and a retaining wall facing to promote plant growth. The ITD Resident Engineer provided a great background on the project including what items worked well and what challenges occurred. This project is a good example of coordination between federal and local agencies, multiple contractors, the railroad, and a variety of stakeholders.

Thanks,

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I just wanted to drop you a note to let you know how much I enjoyed the "walk-through" at Sandpoint on Tuesday. First of all I was most impressed with the Resident, Ken Sorenson, who was right on top of everything and a very fitting personality for such a huge responsibility. I have seen the project under construction for some time, it was a real treat to get to see it first hand in the tour. I was particularly interested with the structural retaining wall and all of the related construction issues that have occurred. This project will certainly enhance the City of Sandpoint for years to come.

Thanks,

John Kinney
