MATHCOUNTS PROBLEM OF THE WEEK
Can you solve this MATHCOUNTS problem? The answer will appear in next week's edition of the Friday Update!

2006 Is Here!
Now that 2006 is finally here, let’s see what we can do with this new number!

If the perimeter of a particular square is 2006 inches, what is the area of the square, in square inches? Express your answer as a decimal to the nearest hundredth.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What is the median of the first 2006 positive integers? Express your answer as a decimal to the nearest tenth.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the arithmetic sequence –7, –3, 1, …, what is the first term greater than 2006?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If it is noon right now, what time will it be in 2006 hours? Be sure to indicate a.m. or p.m.

Answer to last week’s MATHCOUNTS problem:
Since 82% of the people reported a raise or staying even, the remaining 18% would have been the folks who saw a decrease. Since there were 28 respondents, 18% of this number is 0.18 ΄ 28 = 5 respondents, to the nearest whole number.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The $5 billion more that was spent this year was equivalent to 22% of last year’s spending, which we can let be x. This means $5 billion = 0.22x. Dividing both sides by 0.22, we see x = $22.72 billion, and so this year’s sales were $22.72 billion + $5 billion = $27.7 billion.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The calendar year usually has 365 days, which is one day more than 52 exact 7-day weeks. This means that if December 25 is on a Sunday this year, it will not be on a Sunday next year. Instead, because of the extra day, it will be on a Monday in 2006. The only time we don’t bump forward one day is during a leap year. The extra day in February means that we have to bump the day for December 25 ahead two calendar days from the year before. December 25, 2005 is Sunday; 2006 – Monday; 2007 – Tuesday; 2008 – Thursday (bump two days for leap year); 2009 – Friday; 2010 – Saturday. The Saturday before this day will be seven days earlier, or December 18, 2010.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is tricky! The easiest way to figure this out might be to make up some numbers that fit the scenario. Let’s suppose they spent $100 this year. Then they would have spent (4/5)($100) = $80 last year. They spent $20 more this year, which is an increase of 20/80 = 25% since 2004. Alternatively, if you consider that this year’s spending is $5x, then last year’s was $4x. The increase from one year to the next was $x, which is 1/4 of what they had spent in 2004, and 1/4 = 25%.
