USA Today - Engineering Article Features Quote From NSPE
Through NSPE's PR efforts, Tuesday's USA Today (circulation of 2.2 million readers) featured a wonderful engineering article with a quote from NSPE Executive Director Al Gray. The article relates to a perceived rise in the number of black/minority students going into engineering, and also touches on the issue of diversity in the field. You may read the article at the following link:

MATHCOUNTS PROBLEM OF THE WEEK
Can you solve this MATHCOUNTS problem? The answer will appear in next week's edition of the Friday Update!

The Simpsons at the National Competition
Each year we ask the national competitors what their favorite television shows are, and each year The Simpsons is near the top of the list! This year is no exception, and in their honor, we will be incorporating a Simpsons (and CSI)-related question into the Fun Round before the big National Competition Fun Round! Here are some of the Simpsons Fun Round questions from prior years for you to enjoy!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fun Round 2003: The 16 contestants on Survivor are the three Simpsons kids, the four stars on Seinfeld, six anchors from ESPN’s Sports Center, and Goku, Gohan and Goken from Dragonball Z. If each contestant is equally likely to be one of the final two survivors, what is the probability that the final two survivors will be from the same show? Express your answer as a common fraction.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fun Round 2003: Last year, Springfield Middle School took home top MATHCOUNTS honors at their Chapter Competition. On the Sprint Round (with a maximum score of 30), Lisa scored highest with a 28 while Nelson had the lowest score of 1. The mean of the four teammates’ scores was 15 and there were no prime-number scores. Ralph’s score beat Bart’s score, but they both scored above 10. What was Bart’s Sprint Round score?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fun Round 2002: The Springfield Middle School MATHCOUNTS team divided up the ten questions on the Team Round at the State Competition in the following manner: Milhouse Van Houten had #7, 8, 9 and 10; Bart had #4, 5 and 6; Ralph Wiggam had #2 and 3; and Nelson Muntz had #1. We know from the results that Milhouse got all four of his questions correct, Bart only got two of his right, and Ralph got one correct before Nelson gave him a wedgie and the two of them were sent to Principal Skinner’s office. What is the probability, assuming that the questions are not in any order according to difficulty, that Team Springfield answered problems #2, 4 and 9 correctly? Express your answer as a common fraction.

Answer to last week's problem:
In five years, there are approximately 365 × 5 = 1825 days. If this time is divided evenly among 40 stores, a store would open every 1825 ÷ 40 = 46 days, to the nearest whole number. Notice that if leap years are factored in, our answer remains the same.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The 3-2 margin tells us that 3 of every 5 people voted no, and 2 of every 5 people voted yes. Therefore, 2 ÷ 5 = 40% of the people voted in favor of the initiative.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We know the square footage of the Supercenter, and the football field is 50 × 120 = 6000 square yards. Notice, though, that we have square feet and square yards. Let’s put everything in terms of square feet. There are nine square feet in one square yard, so the area of a football field is 6000 × 9 = 54,000 square feet. If we divide the space of the store by the space of the field, we see that one store’s area is equivalent to the area of 200,000 ÷ 54,000 = 3.7 football fields.
