The 14th Intermountain Conference on the Environment and the 42nd Engineering Geology and Geotechnical Engineering Symposium will be held on November 5 and 6, 2009 at Idaho State University, Pocatello.

The conference web site is
www.isu.edu/confsvcs/ice.shtml

The web site states that August 31 is the closing date for abstracts and this notice is reaching you late, but if you contact us by August 31 with the intention of submitting an abstract, the conference organizers will allow several days grace period for you to submit an abstract (about 200 to 400 words).

MATHCOUNTS PROBLEM OF THE WEEK

Can you solve this MATHCOUNTS problem?  The answer will appear in the next edition of the Friday Update!

National Dog Day

Olivia is planning to adopt a puppy on National Dog Day (August 26). The adoption fee at the local shelter is $150 plus a 4% tax. On her way to pick up the puppy she stops at a store to buy a food dish, dog food, a water dish and a bed for her new pup that cost (before tax) $5, $10, $5 and $12, respectively. If these purchases have a 5% sales tax added to them at check out, how much does Olivia spend in total (after tax) on the adoption fees and supplies combined?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gavin’s dog had a litter of puppies. All of the puppies in this litter were either yellow or black. If there was one less black puppy, the ratio of yellow puppies to black puppies would be 2/3. If there was one more black puppy, the ratio of yellow puppies would be 1/2. How many puppies were in the litter?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jermaine’s back yard is fenced in, as shown in the diagram, so that his dog can run around and play. His house is rectangular. How many square feet does Jermaine’s dog have in which to play?

Answer to the last MATHCOUNTS problem:

5)(5)(5)(3)(3)(3) = 3375 ways

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Since Trina and Mason must sit together, let’s consider them as one unit. That means there are 4! = 24 orders in which the four “units” can sit. However, Trina and Mason could switch places within their unit, thus there are really 24(2) = 48 orders in which the five people can sit.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are 5! = 120 orders in which the drinks could be set down. Only one placement would be correct, thus there is a 1/120 chance that she would get it right.
