MATHCOUNTS PROBLEM OF THE WEEK
Can you solve this MATHCOUNTS problem? The answer will appear in next week's
edition of the Friday Update!
Valentine's Day Math
The Problems
The students in Carl’s kindergarten class are all exchanging Valentine’s Day
cards with each other. Each student must make a box in the shape of a
rectangular prism to put on his/her desk for the Valentines to go into. Each box
must have a bottom base with minimum dimensions of 5 inches by 7 inches, and the
box must be at least 4 inches tall. What is the least possible volume of a box,
in cubic inches, that meets these requirements?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kia decided that she wants to give each of her friends a small pouch of candy
hearts. She’ll use fabric and ribbon to make and tie the pouch, and each one
will contain three candy hearts. The hearts come in six colors: white, orange,
pink, green, purple and yellow. If each pouch contains exactly four hearts, such
that no two hearts are the same color, how many possible combinations of hearts
could be in a pouch?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
At Kendra’s school the Key Club has a fundraiser where students send carnations
to other students for Valentine’s Day. A student can purchase a flower from the
Key Club and have it delivered to the recipient during first period. The Key
Club purchases every carnation for 69 cents each from the local florist. After
covering the cost of the carnations, the Key Club keeps the rest of the money as
profit. The Key Club sells white carnations for $1 each, pink carnations for $2
each and red carnations for $3 each. Kendra received seven white, two pink and
one red carnation during first period. What percent of the money spent by the
Key Club to purchase Kendra's carnations is equal to the amount of money they
made in profit on her flowers?
