VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
Volunteers from all engineering disciplines are needed to interview Boise State Students for the 2007 Outstanding Engineering Student Awards. Volunteers will make the selection of the outstanding student in each of the three disciplines (CE, ME, and EE) at Boise State. The time commitment will be one evening for approximately 3 hours at the end of January or early February. The interviews will take place at Boise State University. All student nominees will be honored at the Engineers Week Banquet on February 23. If you would like to volunteer please e-mail Heather Carroll at hcarroll@dohertyeng.com.

NSPE PARTNERS WITH NCEES TO PROMOTE 100 YEARS OF LICENSURE
As part of its “100 Years of Licensure” celebration activities, the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) has partnered with the National Council of Engineering Examiners and Surveyors (NCEES) to continue the promotion of licensure and its importance to both the engineering profession and the public health, safety, and welfare.

"This partnership brings together the two associations vitally concerned with professional licensure issues,” said NSPE Acting Executive Director Arthur Schwartz. “Working with NCEES will strengthen NSPE’s core goal of raising awareness of the professional engineering license and its impact on society not only in the past 100 years, but also well into the future.”

A key component of the partnership will be a joint issue of PE magazine in June 2007, dedicated to all issues surrounding licensure. Some of the topics to be covered include
• Facts and figures about licensure;
• Feature story on the history of engineering licensure;
• “What the PE Means to Me” – a feature of short articles from prominent PEs who tell the licensure story from their own experiences;
• A look at the next 100 years of licensure; and
• A special edition of the “People” section, focusing on interesting PEs throughout history.

In addition to the partnership with NCEES, NSPE is planning to celebrate the “100 Years of Licensure” with the creation of an anniversary logo, prominent features regarding licensure on its Web site, a special event at the annual convention in Denver, Colo., and various other special events and contests throughout the year

For more information about the partnership, and NSPE’s plans for celebrating the “100 Years of Licensure,” please contact Lee Mayfield at 703-684-2863 or lmayfield@nspe.org.

MATHCOUNTS PROBLEM OF THE WEEK
Can you solve this MATHCOUNTS problem? The answer will appear in next week's edition of the Friday Update!

Boarders and Skiers Share the Slopes
The constant slope of a snowpark for boarders can be modeled by the line passing through the point A(1,5) and Point B(7,1).  What is the equation of the line that models the terrain of the snowpark?  Express your answer in the form

y = mx + b where m and b are common fractions.

The price of a daily lift ticket at a ski area is $38.  On Mondays, the area management offers a lift ticket for $20 with the donation of 2 cans of food for the county food bank.  What is the maximum amount a ticket purchaser can spend for two cans of food to donate and still save at least 40 percent of the daily lift ticket price?

________________________________________

The Ed chairlift has a vertical rise of 900 feet and the Green Machine chairlift has a vertical rise of 1200 feet.  Both ski lifts start at the ski lodge and Jason started and ended his day at the ski lodge.  Jason skied a total of 15,900 vertical feet and rode only these two chairlifts a total of 16 times.  How many times did he ride each chairlift?

Answer to last week’s MATHCOUNTS problem:

J + T = 26, T + P = 18, and P + J = 22.  From the third equation J = 22 – P.  Substitute for J in the first equation, 22 – P + T = 26 or T – P = 4.  Add T + P = 18 and T – P = 4 and solve for T: 2T = 22 and  T = 11.  J = 26 – 11 = 15, P = 22 – 15 = 7.  Jung has 15 insects, Tara has 11 insects, and Pavan has 7 insects.

________________________________________

Max – Min = 38, (Max + Min) ÷ 2 = 46.  Multiply the second equation by 2.  Max + Min = 92.  Add this result to the first equation and solve for Max.  2Max = 130, Max = 65.  65 – Min = 38, Min = 27.  The maximum number of insects in the collection was 65 and the minimum number of insects in the collection was 27 during the second week of collecting.

Make a Venn diagram to sort the information.

Let        A = winged, A’ = not winged

            B = less than one-half inch, B’ = not less than one-half inch

            C = more than one color, C’ = not more than one color

2 insects were winged,  more than one color, and

 less than one-half inch long: 2 insects are in A, B and C

            7 insects (of various lengths) were winged and

more than one color: 7 insects are in A and C.

6 insects (winged and non-winged) were more than one color and

less than one-half inch long: 6 insects are in C and B.

            5 insects (of single and multi-colorings) were winged and

less than one-half inch long: 5 insects are in A and B.

            12 insects were less than one-half inch long, non-winged and

only brown: 12 insects are in B but A’ and C’.

            9 insects were winged, more than one-half inch long, and

only brown: 9 insects are in A but B’ and C’.

            14 insects were more than one color, more than one-half inch long, and

non-winged: 14 insects are in C but B’ and A’.

            5 insects did not have any of the sorted characteristics:

5 insects are A’, B’ and C’.

There are 54 insects in the collection?
