MATHCOUNTS PROBLEM OF THE WEEK
Can you solve this MATHCOUNTS problem? The answer will appear in next week's
edition of the Friday Update!
A Top 10 (Times 10) List
Last week Kiplinger released its list of the 100 best values in public
colleges. Congratulations to The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
(UNC) for being at the top of the list! UNC charges about $4600 for in-state
tuition and fees. Kiplinger’s list may be more important than ever considering
the average tuition and fees at four-year public colleges have increased by 57%
since five years ago. According to this average increase, what would we estimate
the cost of in-state tuition and fees for UNC to have been five years ago?
Express your answer to the nearest dollar.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Not only does the report indicate that UNC provides reasonable fees and great
financial aid packages, but it also boasts an accomplished student body. "Among
students in the freshman class of 2004-2005, 78% scored 600 or higher on the
math component of the SAT exam, and 73% scored 600 or above on the verbal
section." According to this information, what is the smallest possible percent
of the freshman class who could have scored 600 or above on the math and verbal
portions of the SAT?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Another college receiving recognition in the article is the State University of
New York College at Geneseo. The article states this college has an enrollment
of 5375 students and a student/faculty ratio of 19:1. According to this
information, how many faculty members does the college have? Express your answer
to the nearest whole number.
Answer to last week’s MATHCOUNTS problem:
We're assuming she is at 40% on January 4 and must get to 100% on January 16.
From the 4th to the 16th allows for 12 increments of improvement. (From the 4th
to the 5th is one, from the 5th to the 6th is one, …) During these 12
increments, she must get back a minimum of 100 – 40 = 60% of her usual ability.
This means that she must gain back 60 ¸ 12 = 5% of her usual ability each day.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Every time Kwan completes 360 degrees, she will again be facing north. If we
divide 5670 by 360, we see that 360 goes into 5670 a total of 15.75 times. This
means that she will make 15 complete revolutions and then another three-quarters
of a turn. Since she is turning counter-clockwise, this three-quarter turn will
move her from facing north, past facing west and south, and then ending at
facing east.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You could probably list out all of the ways since there are not too many. Or by
the counting principal, we can see that there are three options for the first
year, then only two options for the second year, and the third year is the one
medal that is left. This is a total of (3)(2)(1) = 6 different orders.
