FUTURE CITY COMPETITION UPDATE
Students from the Foothills School of Art & Science have been working on their
project since early fall. The students have completed and submitted the model
software of their future city (year 2150). They are currently completing the
required essay and abstract to be submitted shortly. They have also begun work
on a very interesting "underwater world" for the physical model as well. Teams
are limited to three 7th or 8th grade students, 1 teacher mentor and 1
engineering mentor (ISPE member Betsy Roberts). As with last year, they are
competing in Seattle; it is still the nearest competition site to allow out of
state participation. The competition is a great opportunity for students to
become aware of their whole environment and to learn general engineering
concepts.
ISPE members Betsy Roberts and Bill Holder are working on expanding the program
into Idaho next year. Anyone who is interested can contact Betsy at
eroberts@CH2M.com or Bill at
whholder@terracon.com.

MATHCOUNTS PROBLEM OF THE WEEK
Can you solve this MATHCOUNTS problem? The answer will appear in next week's
edition of the Friday Update!
Who’s Got Spirit?
Mars currently has Spirit, and the rover successfully rolled out onto the
surface of Mars last Thursday. The 10-foot journey off its unfolded lander took
approximately two minutes, and was the cause for celebration at NASA.
Maintaining this rate of speed, how many hours would it take the rover to travel
one mile? Express your answer as a decimal to the nearest tenth.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Before taking its first “steps” onto Mars’ surface, Spirit had to turn itself
115 degrees clockwise to get lined up with the exit ramp off the lander. What
percent of a full turn did Spirit have to rotate? Express your answer to the
nearest tenth.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Spirit is currently located in Gusev Crater, which is 95 miles wide. In square
miles, what is the area of circle with this width?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For the twelve days before Spirit could move off the lander, she was busy taking
pictures of the surface of Mars. It is estimated that 3900 pictures were taken.
According to this rate, how many pictures would Spirit take in ten years
(spanning two leap years)? Express your answer in scientific notation.
Answer to last week's problem:
The answer to last week's problem is not available at this time. We apologize
for any inconvenience.
