Credits: Offshore Outsourcing
Join a live Webcast on January 13 in which a panel of experts will discuss
"Off-shore Outsourcing and the U.S. Engineering Community."
U.S. firms have increasingly utilized foreign "offshore" engineering workers to
provide drafting, design, and other services. Offshoring offers financial
savings by utilizing engineering workers from countries with lower overhead.
However, U.S. engineering professionals see this development as reducing
compensation, employment, and advancement opportunities.
The panel will include Richard Anderson, P.E., president of the Accreditation
Board for Engineering and Technology; L. G. (Skip) Lewis Jr., P.E., F.NSPE,
chairman of H2L Consulting Engineers; Craig Musselman, P.E., F.NSPE, an emeritus
member of the New Hampshire Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers; L.
Daniel Tanksley, P.E., JD, general counsel for Halff Associates; and Moderator
Arthur Schwartz, Esq., NSPE deputy executive director and legal counsel.
More information and a registration form is available on the
NSPE Web
site or contact Mary Maul for

A REALLY USEFUL WEB SITE
This month take a look at QuickMath.
QuickMath is an automated service
for answering common math problems over the Internet. Think of it as an online
calculator that solves equations and does all sorts of algebra and calculus
problems - instantly and automatically!
When you submit a question to QuickMath, it is processed by Mathematica, the
largest and most powerful computer algebra package available today. The answer
is then sent back to you and displayed right there on your browser, usually
within a couple of seconds.
Best of all, QuickMath is 100% free! Tell your kids about it.
MATHCOUNTS PROBLEM OF THE WEEK
Can you solve this MATHCOUNTS problem? The answer will appear in next week's
edition of the Friday Update!
New Year Resolutions
Peitlyn decided that she would like to read more during 2005, so she made a
resolution to read 30 minutes each day. If Peitlyn reads an average of 1 page
every 2 minutes and she finishes her 6th book at the end of her reading session
on March 31, 2005, what would be the average number of pages per book for these
six books?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nora’s resolution is to get more exercise. She decided that starting with the
first full week in 2005, she will do a 45-minute workout four times each week
(four days during every seven-day period). This means she will have to exercise
four of the days during the week of Jan. 1 through Jan. 7, and then four of the
days during the week of Jan. 8 through Jan. 14, and so on. If Nora sticks to her
resolution, what is the first possible date on which she could reach a total of
25 hours of exercise for the year?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Riley decided to cut back on the time she spends watching television. During the
first week of 2005 she will allow herself to watch her usual 22 hours of
television. However, during each successive week of 2005, she will only allow
herself to watch television for 90% of the time that she watched during the
previous week. During which week (first, second, third, etc.?) will her viewing
time first be under 5 hours?
