MATHCOUNTS PROBLEM OF THE WEEK
Can you solve this MATHCOUNTS problem? The answer will appear in next week's edition of the Friday Update!

Happy Birthday Tai Shan!
On July 10th, 2008 Tai Shan (a young panda at Smithsonian's National Zoo) turned 3 years old. Happy Birthday Tai Shan!

To celebrate his birthday, Tai Shan got a fruitsicle made of gelatin, fruit and water. If the recipe calls for gelatin, fruit and water in the ratio of 2:1:5, respectively, how much water should be used if 4 cups of gelatin are used?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Since it was his 3rd birthday, the fruitsicle that Tai Shan received was shaped like the number 3. Based on the dimensions given below, if that 3 was made by cutting a circular mold in half and resting one half of it on top of the other, what is the volume, in cubic feet, of the popsicle that was made? Express your answer as a common fraction in terms of π.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tai Shan’s mom is Mei Xiang and his dad is Tian Tian. What percent of the distinct letters in Tia Shan’s name are found in his mom’s name and/or his dad’s name? Express your answer to the nearest tenth.

Answer to the last MATHCOUNTS problem:
To answer this question we need to convert the 1.5 gallons to quarts.
4 quarts/1 gallon = x quarts/ 1.5 gallons
x = 6 quarts

Since we know that 1 quart of water requires 2 tablespoons of mix, 6 quarts requires (6)(2) = 12 tablespoons of mix.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Let b = the number of burgers, h = the number of hotdogs, and c = the number of ears of corn. Now we can set up equations based on the information provided.
b = h + 2
c = h + 3
b + h + c = 20

Now we have 3 variables and 3 equations so we can solve using substitution.

(h + 2) + h + (h + 3) = 20
3h + 5 = 20
h = 5 hotdogs

Now we can plug in the value of h to find the number of ears of corn put on the grill.

c = 5 + 3 = 8 ears of corn
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
First we’ll convert George’s dad’s height to just feet.
2/12 = 1/6 = 0.166666666…
George’s dad is 6.166666666… feet tall.

Now we can set a proportion

2/6.166666666….= 11/x
x = (6.166666666 × 11)/2
x = 33.916666… or 34 feet, to the nearest foot
