MATHCOUNTS PROBLEM OF THE WEEK
Can you solve this MATHCOUNTS problem? The answer will appear in next week's
edition of the Friday Update!
Did You Vote?
In spite of the actual results announced on last Wednesday’s American Idol
finale, in a USATODAY.com poll of readers' favorite American Idol, voters
overwhelming selected Bo Bice. He had 62% of the vote, while Underwood received
38% of the vote, when expressed to the nearest whole percent. If there were
57,000 readers who voted, what is the greatest number of votes Bo Bice could
have received?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some people may think that the American Idol craze must be winding down, but
according to viewing statistics, there is still a huge audience for the show.
This was the fourth season, and there was an estimated 27.3 million viewers each
week. Assuming that there are 12 weeks in the season with one show per week, the
average number of viewers was 27.3 million per week, and the final week had 29.4
million viewers, what was the average number of viewers for each of the first 11
weeks of the season? Express your answer as a decimal to the nearest tenth of a
million.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When things are going so well, why change them? At the end of the finale, it was
announced that auditions for the fifth season of American Idol would take place
this summer in Austin, Denver, Memphis, Boston, Atlanta, San Diego and Chicago.
As you may already know, some people travel around the country to audition in
more than one location. How many different pairs of audition cities could you
pick?
