MEMBERSHIP NEWS
Renew your dues online!
Invoices to members with renewal dates from January through May will be
arriving in your mailbox shortly.
Rather than wait for an invoice, you can renew the convenient way now—online!
You can even update all of your membership information, or at least verify that
it is correct while you are there. To learn how, please see the information
below.
If you receive an invoice and have already renewed, thank you for your continued
membership! Please reply to this email and let me know that you have already
renewed and by what method (check or credit card). NSPE’s records do not yet
reflect your renewal and I would like to make them aware of your renewal so that
your membership status is properly continued.
• To renew your membership online and bill your credit card, visit
http://www.nspe.org/membership/me1-join.asp. Note that you need your
membership number in order to renew online. If you don’t have it, please reply
to this email and I’ll provide it for you. You will be asked for your user
name and a password. Your membership number is your username, and your
last name with the first letter capitalized is your password.
• Please remember that when you pay your dues by credit card, you can either pay
once or pay in monthly installments.
FUTURE CITY
The 3rd Annual Idaho Regional Future City Competition will be held again in
January at Boise State University. Volunteer opportunities exist at all levels
for this great program for 7th and 8th graders, from the day of the event -
including judging and scoring - to ongoing planning and coordination for the
competition - logistics, school and mentor recruitment, and fund raising. As a
program, Future City has recently received a number of awards including "Partner
of the Year" at the National Volunteering Conference. Also read more about this
great program online at Engineering-News Record (enr.com).

results are: Dustin Commons will serve as President, with Jason Ritchie and

MATHCOUNTS
MATHCOUNTS is a national math coaching and competition program for 6th, 7th, and
8th grade students created and run by the National Society of Professional
Engineers, the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics, and the CNA
Insurance Company. More importantly, it is one of the largest programs sponsored
by the Idaho Society of Professional Engineers. This program provides an
opportunity for students to have fun while exploring areas of math that they may
not see in their normal class curriculum and it also gives students a chance to
be recognized for their achievements on both team and individual bases.
The Southwest Chapter is currently looking for an individual or individuals who
would be interested in coordinating next year's event. Please contact one of the
chapter officers for more information if you are interested. Officer contact
information can be found on the
ISPE web site.
Beyond logistics coordination prior to the day of the event, the majority of
effort involves setting aside a Saturday in February for the event.

MATHCOUNTS PROBLEM OF THE WEEK
Can you solve this MATHCOUNTS problem? The answer will appear in next week's
edition of the Friday Update!
Loving the Pool
Janelle loves hanging out at her neighborhood pool. On Friday she arrived at
the pool at 10:30 a.m. and left at 4:15 p.m. During each hour, the pool has a
15-minute adult swim from 45 minutes after the hour to the top of the next hour.
During what percent of Janelle’s time at the pool on Friday was it adult swim
time? Express your answer to the nearest whole number.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are 80 households that are members of Janelle’s pool. Sixty percent of the
households pay the standard $200 membership feel. Thirty percent of the
households receive a 20% discount on the standard membership fee and the
remaining households do not have to pay a membership fee. What is the average
membership fee per household for the 80 households?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Janelle’s pool is rectangular in shape; it is 40 feet wide and 100 feet long.
The first 47 feet of the length is the shallow end (three feet deep) and the
last 47 feet of the length is the deep end (eight feet deep). The middle six
feet of the length is where the floor of the pool steadily and gradually drops
from three feet to eight feet deep. How many inches does the depth of the pool
change from the 48th to the 49th foot of the pool’s length?
