George Russell, P.E.
For his profound influence on several generations of engineers, Professor George
Russell has been inducted into the Idaho Engineering Hall of Fame. His selection
was made by consensus of the Idaho Society of Professional Engineers (ISPE). As
professor of civil engineering at the University of Idaho in Moscow, Professor
Russell has been teacher, mentor and role model. In his career of more than 55
years, he actively promoted ethics, professionalism, and engineering licensure.
In 1967, he became assistant dean of the College of Engineering, then served as
associate dean from 1980 until his retirement in 1985. Russell has served his
profession as vice president of the National Society of Professional Engineers
(NSPE), as president and national director of ISPE, and chair of the
Professional Engineers in Education Practice Division. He was twice appointed to
the Idaho State Board of Registration of Professional Engineers and Professional
Land Surveyors. His public service is equally extensive, including service to
Moscow's Chamber of Commerce, Economic Development Council and City Council. He
has served as Acting Mayor of Moscow and has received numerous distinguished
service awards for his work. Maintaining the Engineering Hall of Fame is only
one of the activities of the only society in Idaho to represent all engineering
disciplines. ISPE works to ensure public safety by promoting quality engineering
and increasing the expertise of Idaho's engineers. The organization contributes
to the public's understanding of how engineers and engineering affect the daily
lives of Americans. Growing the next generation of engineers by providing
programs for elementary through high school students is also central to the
mission of the society.
