Idaho Society of Professional Engineers Friday Update – 11/30/12
What’s Inside:
UPCOMING EVENTS:
This last week we celebrated a holiday that commemorates Thanksgiving. During this time, we remember and acknowledge the blessings we have been given.
As I reflected on this, I felt that it was important to let all of you know how each of you, in varying ways, has touched my life over the years.
Whether it was a word of encouragement a few years ago when I lost both my wife, as well as my father to cancer; or whether it was your friendship, mentorship, and support when I first joined ISPE, NSPE, and became active; or whether it was merely allowing me the honor and privilege of serving alongside many of you, and learning about and appreciating the gifts and talents that each of you bring to the profession, as well as the Society.
Thank you for who you are, as well as all you have done, and continue to do for the profession of engineering, and ISPE.
This year, we have much to be thankful for, and also, much work to do, to preserve and maintain, as well as build upon the successes of the great men and women that preceded us in this honorable profession of engineering.
If we look around us, it is easy to see the need for talented men and women who understand the engineering fundamentals, who can wield that understanding in a manner that promotes public health, safety, and well-being, and that do so while upholding the highest ethical standards.
Again, I thank you for all you do in that regard, and I join with you in looking forward to the year ahead.
Greg

MATHCOUNTS PROBLEM OF THE WEEKCan you solve this MATHCOUNTS problem? The answer will appear in the next edition of the Friday Update!
Cyber Monday SaleThis year, Xavier purchased a new gaming system on the first of November for the regular price of $300, plus tax. Lucas purchased the same new gaming system on sale on Black Friday for $250, plus tax. Cloe purchased the same new gaming system on sale on Cyber Monday for $220, plus tax. If Xavier, Lucas and Cloe each received free shipping on their purchase and each paid 5.5% sales tax, what is the total amount the three friends spent on the three new gaming systems? What was the average amount paid before tax by Xavier, Lucas and Cloe for a new gaming system? By waiting until Cyber Monday to purchase a new gaming system, Cloe paid the least amount of the three friends. What was Cloe’s percent discount if the gaming system regularly sells for $300? Express your answer to the nearest tenth.
