ATTENTION CREATIVE ENGINEERS: DISCOVERY CHANNEL
WANTS YOU FOR SUPER RUBES TV SHOW
Super Rubes is a one-hour show that follows a band of talented
creators as they design, build, and set off a massive Chain Reaction Machine in
front of a cheering crowd. The point of a Chain Reaction Machine is to do
something very simple, like turn on a light bulb, using as many steps as
possible. This is an opportunity for engineers to let their creative hair down
and have some fun building a giant Chain Reaction Machine. Their team will take
on impossible challenges (i.e. “Can you crack an egg with a human hair?”) in a
race against the clock.
They are looking for individuals to comprise a team - a team of fun and outgoing
people who can work together to design, build, and implement crazy, visually
stunning, creative Chain Reaction Machines.
Interested? Email a recent photo and a brief bio. Please act quickly as they
cast on a short schedule.

MATHCOUNTS PROBLEM OF THE WEEK
Can you solve this MATHCOUNTS problem? The answer will appear in next week's
edition of the Friday Update!
Hot Air Balloons
Fall is a beautiful time of year to take a hot air balloon ride! Hot air
balloons fly by heating the air inside the “envelope” (an inner bag that is able
to hold air) until it provides enough upward force to lift the basket and its
occupants off the ground.
Billy’s new hot air balloon is 100 feet in diameter and looks like a basketball
(it is a sphere). What volume of air, in cubic feet, will Billy’s hot air
balloon hold when it is completely filled? Express your answer as a decimal to
the nearest tenth.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Charles takes a hot air balloon trip over part of the Alleghany Mountains with
his dad. In the morning they travel at an average speed of 40 miles per hour for
a distance of 120 miles before they land to take a 45 minute lunch/stretching
break. After lunch they fly 175 miles at an average speed of 35 miles per hour.
How long, in hours, was the entire trip, including the lunch/stretching break?
Express your answer as a decimal to the nearest hundredth.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rhonda has discovered that ten super-sized helium balloons provide just enough
lift to carry her three-pound toy. At that same rate, how many super-sized
balloons would be required to carry Rhonda, if she weighs 81 pounds?
Answer to last week’s MATHCOUNTS problem:
600 students per hour ÷ 5 lines = 120 students per line per hour
120 students ÷ 60 minutes = 2 students per minute.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1 pudding cup = 1 bag of chips
½ of a bag of chips = 1 apple, so 1 bag of chips = 2 apples
If 1 pudding cup equals 2 apples, it also equals 20 carrot sticks.
Juliana does not have two apples, nor does she have 20 carrot sticks, so she’ll
have to give him a combination of apple(s) and carrot sticks.
If 2 apples equal 1 pudding cup, then1 apple equals ½ of the pudding cup.
If 20 carrot sticks equal 1 pudding cup, then 10 carrot sticks equal the other ½
of the pudding cup.
Juliana must give Michael her 1 apple and 10 of her carrot sticks.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are 5 options for Jennifer’s main dish.
There are 15 combinations of 2 different side items for Jennifer’s lunch.
(the first item can make 5 unique pairs, the second item can make 4 unique
pairs, etc… so, 5 + 4 + 3 + 2 + 1 = 15)
There are 4 drink options for Jennifer’s lunch.
Now multiply.
5 × 15 × 4 = 300 combinations.
