Idaho Society of Professional Engineers Friday Update – 10/19/12
WHAT'S INSIDE
UPCOMING EVENTS
FROM THE PRESIDENTGood afternoon, ISPE Members
When I became involved with ISPE/NSPE I was looking for a way to bring professional engineers together to discuss standard of care issues that seemed to be more common in the profession.
I was concerned about a decline in the public’s perception of the
engineering profession. I wondered what we might be doing to contribute to that.
I was interested in learning what steps we might take to reverse that trend. I
wanted to help us re-earn the lost respect, and trust the public once had in the
profession.
I have found other professional engineers who share my concern, and want to do something about it. They serve with me on the NSPE Task Force on the Standard of Professionalism in the Engineering Practice. If any of you would be interested in supporting our efforts on this task force, please let me know.
Over the last several months, since I became president, I have been fulfilling the promise I made to you in June, to read through the mission and vision statements of the society, review our strategic plan, and talk to professional engineers about ISPE.
I encourage any of you that would like to be part of this effort, to review our website: http://www.idahospe.org/, and the various links you will find on: http://www.idahospe.org/About%20Us.htm
Also, over the next few weeks I plan to share with you information that others from around the county have sent to me, that share this vision, and want to help.
NSPE “RACE FOR RELEVANCE” This last summer, the national society has been working hard in an effort to focus its efforts, to restructure itself to focus more efficiently on serving the most important needs of the profession. This effort has been primarily with the guidance found in a book called: "Race for Relevance." I have watched with interest as the survey results have been compiled.
There is good information to consider; however, it boils down to the following: In order to help make ISPE successful in its mission to serve the profession, we need to perform our mission statement, and carry out the strategic plan we developed in 2003, and focus on the issues that most closely are affecting us today.
For your information, if you haven’t already, here is a link to NSPE’s "Race for Relevance:" http://www.nspe.org/HOD/survey-results.html
At the link above you will find other links to the survey results, as well as a video of the presentation by the author of the book.

MATHCOUNTS
MATHCOUNTS has been historically supported by NSPE partly because
students in the United States were losing their ability to compete with students
from other countries in math. There is great satisfaction from helping put on
and serve at these local MATHCOUNTS competitions. It serves as a great
opportunity to share a positive image of professional engineering to the young
public, as well as the teachers. You can really impact the lives of these young
people at these events, and inspire them for the rest of their lives. Today, there is little incentive for teachers to promote these events, so it takes a little encouragement to get schools to sign up.
Please note that the deadline for registering school is fast approaching, and each chapter should take some time to see where your local coordinator is, in terms of progress in contacting schools. Maybe they could use some help.
Here is a little excerpt from the link that can be found on the ISPE website: http://www.idahospe.org/MathCounts.htm
Welcome to the 2012-2013 MATHCOUNTS
season! Registration is now open. Please go to the national MATHCOUNTS website
(link below) to download a registration form and a school handbook. The school
handbooks contain information on program rules and how to build a program at
your school. They also contain over 300 practice problems that your team can use
to explore mathematic concepts and prepare for the competitions.

COMMITTEES (Remember, active participation in a professional society allows you to earn pdh’s. J ) ISPE needs a few volunteers who would like to serve in the Annual meeting committee, the Audit Committee, and the Awards Committee. These committees perform a very valuable role in the execution of our mission and vision statement, and the fruits of your labor in these areas will help ISPE be successful in benefiting the profession of engineering.
I hope you enjoy reading this letter, and reviewing the various links. Have a great weekend. Greg
US EPA WORKSHOP – CONSTRUCTION GENERAL PERMIT 2012
The Panhandle Stormwater and Erosion Education Program (SEEP) and
the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency would like to invite you to a workshop
on the 2012 Construction General Permit for Stormwater Discharges (CGP). The
workshop is planned for...
MATHCOUNTS PROBLEM OF THE WEEKCan you solve this MATHCOUNTS problem? The answer will appear in the next edition of the Friday Update!
Ten, Eleven, TwelveThis past Thursday’s date was 10/11/12. For this particular date, the month, day and two-digit year (MM, DD, YY) are consecutive integers. The sum of these integers is 10 + 11 + 12 = 33. What is the maximum value possible for the sum of the day, month and two-digit year of a date consisting of three such consecutive integers? Between January 1, 2000 and December 31, 2099, how many such dates occur where the month, day and two-digit year (MM, DD, YY) are three consecutive integers? A date is randomly selected from the group of dates between January 1, 2000 and December 31, 2099 which have a month, day and two-digit year (MM, DD, YY) that are three consecutive integers. What is the probability that exactly two of the three consecutive integers are prime? Express your answer as a common fraction.
