MATHCOUNTS PROBLEM OF THE WEEK
Can you solve this MATHCOUNTS problem? The answer will appear in next week's
edition of the Friday Update!
Playing Cards
Margaret and her friends are playing a card game. In a deck of 36 solid
colored cards, each card is purple, blue or green. There are twice as many blue
cards as purple cards and the number of green cards is equal to half of the
combined number of purple and blue cards. How many cards are green?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The deck of 36 cards from the previous question is shuffled and turned face
down. What is the probability that Margaret draws a blue card?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From the 36 card deck mentioned above, 4 blue cards are removed. The remaining
cards are shuffled and turned face down. What is the probability that Margaret
draws a purple card from the deck?
Answer to last week’s MATHCOUNTS problem:
Each A is worth 4 points, so:
4 points × 3 classes = 12 points
Each B is worth 3 points, so:
3 points × 2 classes = 6 points
Find Stanley’s average by dividing the total number of points by the number of
classes he took.
12 + 6 = 18
18 ÷ 5 = 3.6
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Use quizzes, which are worth the least, as the basic unit…
Each test is equal to 2 quizzes; therefore, 3 tests are equivalent to 6 quizzes.
Each project is equal to 1.5 tests; therefore, 2 projects are equal to 3 tests,
which is equal to 6 quizzes.
Since each group of assignments (3 tests, 6 quizzes, 2 projects) is equal to the
same amount of your grade, each group of assignments is equal to 1/3 of her
grade.
There are 2 projects, so:
½ × 1/3 = 1/6
Each project is worth 1/6 of her grade.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
First you need to find the sum of the 4 quiz scores. To do this, use the average
“equation.”
x ÷ 4 = 89 points
x = 356 points
Now find the sum of the three remaining quiz scores.
x ÷ 3 = 94 points
x = 282 points
The difference between the two sums is the score that was dropped.
356 – 282 = 74 points
