MATHCOUNTS PROBLEM OF THE WEEK
Can you solve this MATHCOUNTS problem? The answer will appear in next week's
edition of the Friday Update!
Baseball Standings
As of August 30, 2006 the Los Angeles Dodgers have won 71 and lost 62 games.
If the regular season has 162 games what is the projected number of wins for the
Dodgers if they continue to win and lose at the same rate? Express your answer
to the nearest whole number.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox are rival major league baseball
teams in the American League. As of August 30, 2006 the Yankees have won 78 and
lost 53 games and the Red Sox have won 71 and lost 62 games. There are 162*
regular season games. If the Yankees continue to win at their current rate, what
winning rate do the Red Sox need for the remainder of the season to tie with the
same number of wins for the division championship? Express your answer to the
nearest thousandth.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As of August 30, 2006, Joe Mauer of the Minnesota Twins has the best batting
average in major league baseball’s American League with 151 hits in 432 at-bats.
Ichiro Suzuki of the Seattle Mariners has 179 hits in 559 at-bats. Let's assume
Joe Mauer continues to get hits at the same rate and has exactly 109 more
official at-bats during the remainder of the season. Additionally, we'll assume
Ichiro has 141 more official at-bats during the remainder of the season. What is
the fewest number of hits Ichiro must have during the remainder of the season in
order to beat Joe Mauer's final batting average for the American League batting
championship? Express your answer to the nearest whole number.
Answer to last week’s MATHCOUNTS problem:
The Black Crater Wildfire in Central Oregon was started by a lightning strike on
July 23, 2006. Reports on the size of the fire were issued by The Oregon State
Fire Marshall as shown below.
Date Fire Size
(in acres)
July 27 350
July 28 2684
July 29 4727
July 30 5700
July 31 9000
Aug 1 9200
Aug 2 9200
The fire grew from 5,700 to 9,000 acres between July 30 and July 31. The
increase in acres is 9,000-5,700 = 3,300 acres.
The greatest percentage increase in the size of the fire occurred between July
27 and July 28. The fire grew from 350 to 2,684 acres. The percentage increase
is found by finding how much the fire grew between the two dates, then dividing
by the size of the fire on the first of the two dates, and then multiplying by
100%(2.684-350)/350 x 100% = 667%.
The dates for the greatest acreage increase are different than the dates for the
greatest percentage increase. When the fire went from 350 to 2,684 acres, the
fire increased its size by a factor of 6.67. When the fire went from 5,700 to
9,000 acres, the fire only increased its size by a factor of 0.58.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Black Crater Wildfire burned (9,400 ÷ 640) = 14.69, or 14.7 square miles, to
the nearest tenth.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The projected cost to fight the Black Crater Fire is ($9,300,000 ÷ 9,400) =
$989.36 or $1,000 per acre, to the nearest hundred dollars.
