MATHCOUNTS PROBLEM OF THE WEEK
Can you solve this MATHCOUNTS problem? The answer will appear in next week's edition of the Friday Update!

Tiger Woods
Tiger Woods is considered to be one of the best professional golfers in the history of golf. As of February 1, 2007 he is ranked number one in the world by World Golf Ranking.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tiger Woods won the 2007 Buick Invitational Golf Tournament at Torrey Pines on January 28, 2007. The tournament had four rounds and each round had 18 holes. His scores for the four rounds were 66, 72, 69, and 66. What is the positive difference between his median and mean score of the four rounds? Express your answer as a decimal to the nearest hundredth.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Buick Invitational Golf Tournament is four rounds with 18 holes in each round. Tiger Woods won $936,000 at the 2007 Buick Invitational Golf Tournament. What were his mean earnings per hole at the 2007 Buick Invitational Golf Tournament?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As a professional golfer, Tiger Woods has competed in 215 tournaments. He has made the cut in 201 of those tournaments. To make the cut he has to play well enough in the first two rounds of a tournament to qualify to play in the last two rounds. In what percent of these tournaments did Tiger Woods not make the cut? Express your answer to the nearest tenth.

Answer to last week’s MATHCOUNTS problem:
Let G represent the Green Bay Packers and K represent the Kansas City Chiefs. G + K = 45 and G – K = 25. Add the two equations. 2G = 70. G = 35 and K = 10. The Green Bay Packers scored 35 points and the Kansas City Chiefs scored 10 points.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The mean of the winning scores is (20 + 48 + 32 + 24 + 21) χ 5 = 29.
The mean of the losing scores is (17 + 21 + 29 + 21 + 10) χ 5 = 19.6.
The positive difference between the mean of the winning scores and the mean of the losing scores is 29 – 19.6 = 9.4.
The median of the winning scores (20, 21, 24, 32, 48) is 24.
The median of the losing scores (10, 7, 21, 21, 29) is 21.
The positive difference between the median of the winning scores and the median of the losing scores is 24 – 21 = 3.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Divide the amount of money spent for one 30-second commercial for Superbowl XLI by the amount of money spent for one 30-second commercial for 1967
$2,600,000 χ $42,000 = 61.9… It would have been possible to purchase sixty-one (61) complete 30-second commercials.
