FUTURE CITIES
The Idaho Regional Steering Committee of Bill Holder, Lynn Olson, Meghann Donley, Erika Stoddard and Steve Loop would like to thank all those who helped to make this year's 3rd Idaho Regional Future City Competition a huge success on January 6th at Boise State University. We had great support with more than 100 judges and engineer mentors without whom this competition would not have been possible. These volunteers came from more than 24 companies around the Treasure Valley including Albertsons, ASCE, ACHD, Boise State University College of Engineering, CH2M Hill, CSHQA, DEQ, Doherty & Associates, HDR, Holladay Engineering, Horrocks Engineers, Hewlett Packard, ISPE, ITD, Jack Johnson Co., JUB, Kittleson & Associates, Keller & Associates, Micron, Motive Power, Parametrix, Paragon, Power Engineers, Project Engineering Consultants, Six Mile Engineering, TenXsys, Toothman-Orton Engineering, Washington Group International, Weyerhauser, White Leasure Development, Wood Rodgers WRG Design Inc., and more! Thanks again for all who donated time and money to this effort including the ISPE Southwest Chapter and State Foundation.

This year's winner was Zeymous, Flathead Valley Montessori Academy out of Kalispell, Montana. They will be going on to compete at Nationals in Washington DC February 18-22, all expenses paid. The other teams that made it into the final round of the competition were from North Junior High (Boise, ID) , Beehive Academy (Salt Lake City, UT), Classical at Home (Eagle, ID) and Greenleaf Learning Club School (Wilder, ID).

We are already planning for next year and are looking to expand the steering committee. Please contact a steering committee member or visit the Idaho Future City Website for more information at http://sections.asce.org/sis/futurecity.html. Thanks!!

MATHCOUNTS PROBLEM OF THE WEEK
Can you solve this MATHCOUNTS problem? The answer will appear in next week's edition of the Friday Update!

Martin Luther King Jr.
Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929. His birthday is celebrated each year as a national holiday on the third Monday of January. What is the earliest date in January the nation can celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday? What is the latest date in January the nation can celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday? What is the probability Martin Luther King Jr.’s actual birth date falls on the third Monday in January? Express your answer as a common fraction.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On August 28, 1963 Martin Luther King Jr. led a march of approximately 250,000 people from the nation’s Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. His speech at the Lincoln Memorial included increasing the minimum wage from $1.15 per hour to $2.00 per hour. Congress increased the federal minimum wage from $1.15 to $1.25 per hour in 1963. The federal minimum wage did not reach $2.00 per hour until 1974. What is the positive difference between the percent increase in the minimum wage passed by congress in 1963 and the percent increase requested by Martin Luther King Jr. in his speech? Express your answer to the nearest tenth.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Assume the federal minimum wage was $1.15 per hour on September 1, 1963 and $2.00 per hour on September 1, 1974. Assume the federal minimum wage increased annually on September 1 by r percent of the previous year’s wage for each of the years during this time period. What is the value of r? Express your answer as a decimal to the nearest tenth.

Answer to last week’s MATHCOUNTS problem:
The slope of the terrain can be written as rise over run. The rise is the difference in the y-values: (5 – 1) = 4. The run is the difference in the x-values: (1 – 7) = –6. The slope is 4 χ (–6) = –2 χ 3 = –2/3. Use y = mx + b to find the y-intercept. 5 = –(2/3) 1 + b. b = 5 2/3 = 17/3. The equation of the line that models the terrain is y = (–2/3)x + 17/3.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The total amount spent can be no more than 60% of the daily ticket price: 0.6($38) = $22.80. The total amount that can be spent minus the cost of the ticket is the amount that can be spent on the two cans of food. $22.80 – $20 = $2.80. The most that can be spent for the two cans of food is $2.80.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The total vertical distance Jason went up on the ski lifts throughout the day is equal to the total vertical distance he skied down the mountain. Let E = Ed chairlift and G = Green Machine chairlift. 900E + 1200 G = 15,900 and E + G = 16. Multiply the second equation by –900 and add the result to the first equation. 300G = 1500. G = 5 and E = 11.
