MATHCOUNTS PROGRAM ADDS
ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL SEASON
The 2001 - 2002 MATHCOUNTS program is wrapping up another successful
season. 283 mathletes from 46 schools participated this year. The winning
schools from each of our 5 chapter competitions are as follows:
North - Coeur d'Alene:
Canfield Middle School (Coeur d'Alene)
North -Lewiston:
Jenifer Jr. High School (Lewiston)
Southwest:
North Jr. High School (Boise)
Magic Valley:
Community School (Sun Valley)
Southeast:
Rocky Mountain Middle School (Idaho Falls)
The teams from these and several other schools came to Boise in March to
participate in the Idaho State Competition. This year's competition was
the closest in memory. The top four teams were separated by less than one
correct team round question. Here are the final results:
1st North Jr. High School (Boise)
2nd Moscow Jr. High School (Moscow)
3rd Rocky Mountain Middle School (Idaho Falls)
4th Jenifer Jr. High School (Lewiston)
In parallel with the team competition at state, individuals vied for a
chance to represent Idaho at the National MATHCOUNTS Competition. The top
ten ranked individuals after the morning written rounds participated in
the countdown round in front of a roomful of impressed onlookers. All four
ISPE chapters were represented in the round. In the end, the following
four students took the honors:
1st
Josh Archibald-Seiffer - Les Bois Jr. High School (Boise)
2nd
James Meldrum - Rocky Mtn Middle School (Idaho Falls)
3rd
Emily Nelson - Montrose Academy (Moscow)
4th
Kyle Antonini - North Jr. High School (Boise)
These four, along with Mike Lehosit, the coach of the North Jr. High team,
will travel to Chicago in June to compete in the national competition.
In addition, Josh, James, Emily, and Kyle each received a $1,000
scholarship to each of the three state engineering schools. It was a great
example of cooperation between

the University of Idaho, Boise State University, and Idaho State
University in promoting engineering education.
The MATHCOUNTS program couldn't do it without the support of the ISPE
membership. This year we had many volunteers help with various
responsibilities; foremost among them were our chapter coordinators: Kris
Brown - Coeur d'Alene, Travis Wambeke - Lewiston, Jonathan Lenhart -
Southwest, Mike Trabert - Magic Valley, and Steve Walker - Southeast.
Thanks for all of your hard work. We also had great financial support from
the general membership. This year we raised over $1,800 for MATHCOUNTS.
Thanks to all of our supporters.
