MATHCOUNTS is a national math coaching and competition program for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students created and run by the National Society of Professional Engineers, the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics, and the CNA Insurance Company. Participation in the program is through your school. MATHCOUNTS provides an opportunity for students to have fun while exploring areas of math that they may not see in their normal class curriculum. It also gives students a chance to be recognized for their achievements on both team and individual bases.

MATHCOUNTS has two major programs: the Competition Program and the Club Program.

In the Competition Program, schools receive math problems and activities that they can use to prepare for regional (chapter) competitions in February. Winning teams and individuals at the regional competitions advance to compete in the state competition in Boise in March. The top 4 individuals and the coach of the winning team from the state competition receive an all-expense-paid trip to Washington D.C. to represent Idaho in the MATHCOUNTS National Competition in May.

In the Club Program (which is free), schools are provided the structure, activities, and problems they can use to form a math club. Participating schools are eligible for prize drawings.

Information on the Idaho MATHCOUNTS program is shown below. A link to the national MATHCOUNTS web site is at the bottom of this page.

Program Status Update - 12/06/2016

Welcome to the 2016-2017 season of MATHCOUNTS.  So far, we have 32 Idaho schools registered to participate in the competition program!  Registration forms and the school handbook are available for download at the national MATHCOUNTS website (link below).  Schools that have already registered will be given instructions by the national office on how to access both the school competition test materials and the PowerPoint version of the school competition countdown round from the website.  Please note that the registration deadline is December 16th.  Registration is still allowed after that date, but there is an extra late fee added.

This year’s chapter and state coordinators are listed below with their contact information.  Please feel free to contact any of us if you have any questions.  Chapter competition dates and locations will be updated as they are available.
