IBPEPLS LETTER

Recently the Idaho board of Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors (IBPEPLS) published a letter addressing several questions concerning Idaho Code 55-1613 Monuments Disturbed by Construction Activities –Procedures – Requirements.  The IBPEPLS suggested, and ISPE concurs, that all engineers engaged in construction work should be fully aware of the code and the board’s recent feedback on the topic.  ISPE as well as ACEC and ISPLS have been and will continue discussions on this topic with the IBPEPLS.   If any ISPE members would like to provide feedback concerning this letter or any other issue, we would certainly appreciate your input.

MATHCOUNTS PROBLEM OF THE WEEK

Can you solve this MATHCOUNTS problem?  The answer will appear in the next edition of the Friday Update!

Tangram Geometry!

The tangram is an ancient Chinese puzzle consisting of seven flat geometric shapes. These shapes, called tans, include one square, one parallelogram and five right, isosceles triangles. The object of the game is to rearrange all seven tans, without overlapping, to create specific shapes which are given using just a silhouette or outline, as shown.

The seven tangram pieces here are arranged in a square where AB = BC = CD = DA = 8 units. Point G is the midpoint of segment AC, and point H is the midpoint of segment GC.

 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What is the area of quadrilateral AGFJ, in square units?

 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The perimeter of △ADG can be written in the form a(√b + c) units. What is the numerical value of a + b + c?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What is the ratio of the perimeter of parallelogram AEFJ to the perimeter of square FGHI? Express your answer as a common fraction in simplest radical form.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Suppose △BIJ is rotated 360 degrees about segment BI.  What would be the volume of the resulting solid, in cubic units? Express your answer as a common fraction in terms of π.
