MATHCOUNTS PROBLEM OF THE WEEK
Can you solve this MATHCOUNTS problem? The answer will appear in next week's edition of the Friday Update!

National Countdown Round
Here are a few questions from the 2008 National Countdown Round. Enjoy! (Congratulations to all of the National competitors!)

A line with slope m is tangent to a circle with its center at the origin. If the line is tangent at (3, 4), what is the value of m? Express your answer as a common fraction.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sonia takes at most three tests on any one school day, and at most seven tests in any five consecutive school days. (A Friday and the following Monday are considered consecutive school days.) What is the least number of consecutive school days in which Sonia could take 20 tests?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A set of distinct positive integers has a total of 11 digits, and all the digits are 1s. What is the smallest possible sum of the integers in the set?

Answer to last week’s MATHCOUNTS problem:
First we’ll find the actual amount of depreciation.

$490,000 – $410,000 = $80,000

Now divide the amount of depreciation by the 2005 purchase price and multiply by 100.

($80,000 ÷ $490,000) × 100 = 16%, to the nearest whole number
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
First, let’s find their total investment in the home (purchase price and upgrades/major repairs).

$72,000 + $10,000 + $20,000 + $15,000 = $117,000

Next, let’s find out the actual value of the appreciation.

$510,000 - $117,000 = $393,000

Finally, we’ll divide the value of the appreciation by Greg and Marsha’s investment, and multiply by 100.

($393,000 ÷ $117,000) × 100 = 335.8974…% ≈ 335.9%, to the nearest tenth
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
First, we’ll follow the same steps that we did in question 2 to find out the amount of appreciation from 1976 to 2008.

$450,000 - $117,000 = $333,000

($333,000 ÷ $117,000) × 100 = 284.6154%

Now we can find the difference between the percent appreciations.

335.8974% - 284.6154% = 51.3%, to the nearest tenth
