The MATHCOUNTS Foundation is pleased to announce that, for the second year, ESPN will be producing an hour-long program on the MATHCOUNTS National Competition. This television program will air on ESPN2, June 3 at noon EDT, 10:00 am MDT / 9:00 am PDT.

Focused primarily on the drama of the Countdown Round, the program will highlight the energy and excitement of the Mathletes® as they test their math and communication skills. Similar to last year, we expect this to be a compelling television program. Don't miss your chance to share in the magic of the 2004 MATHCOUNTS National Competition in your own home!

The fact that ESPN is covering the National Competition speaks volumes about MATHCOUNTS and public awareness and interest in student achievement through all forms of competition. Congratulations!

MATHCOUNTS PROBLEM OF THE WEEK
Can you solve this MATHCOUNTS problem? The answer will appear in next week's edition of the Friday Update!

Memorial Day Weekend Kicks Off Vacation Season
With Memorial Day Weekend upon us, families around the country will be heading off on vacations. However, due to the growing fuel prices, some experts are wondering if the cost of the gas it will take to get the family to its vacation destination will deter some from making the journey. The Zappone family is planning to drive to the beach 300 miles away. Their car averages 22 miles per gallon. If gas costs $2.11, how much will the Zappones spend on gas for the roundtrip?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Zappones are a family of three (two adults and one child), and they are meeting up with the Chandlers (two adults and no children) and the Newills (two adults and two children) at the beach. When they all went out for a great seafood dinner, the total bill came to $134.82. The three families decided to split the bill evenly by determining the average cost per person, rather than figuring out the exact cost of each person’s order. However, rather than simply splitting the bill nine ways, they decided that a kid's portion of the bill should only be a third of an adult’s portion of the bill. Assuming that the tip was handled separately, how much did the Zappones' portion of the bill come to?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
No vacation to the beach is complete without a game of Skee Ball on the boardwalk! In a particular game of Skee Ball, Mrs. Zappone scored 180 points. Of the nine balls she rolled during the game, at least three of them landed in the “40 points” hole. The six remaining balls she rolled landed in some combination of 0-, 10-, 20-, 30-, 40- and 50-point holes. How many different combinations are possible for these six rolls in order to reach her 180-point total? (Remember that the order does not matter.)

Answer to last week's problem:
If we have the ratio 1.5 million / 1 acre and multiply that by 1 acre / 43,560 square feet (which is equivalent to multiplying by 1), we get 34.4 cicadas, to the nearest tenth.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In 17 years, there are 52 × 17 = 884 weeks. Only 2.5 of these weeks are spent above ground, which is 2.5 ÷ 884 = 0.3% of their lives!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We know that the 13-year cicadas will come out in 13, 26, 39, … years. These are multiples of 13. The 17-year cicadas will come out again in 17, 34, 51, … years, which are multiples of 17. We need to find the first number of years that is both a multiple of 13 and of 17. Since these numbers are relatively prime, the first multiple of both will be 13 × 17 = 221 years.
