MATHCOUNTS PROBLEM OF THE WEEK
Can you solve this MATHCOUNTS problem? The answer will appear in next week's edition of the Friday Update!

FALL Functions
For the following problems let f(x) = x + 2, a(x) = 3x – 4 and l(x) = x2 + 9.

Find the value of the functions f(x), a(x) and l(x), when x = 6.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
What is the value of f(x) + a(x). Express your answer in terms of x.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
What is the value of f(a(l(l(8))))?

Answer to the last MATHCOUNTS problem:
For easy calculation, let’s find the totals first

Now to find the percent of the total mentions that are education mentions, we divide and then multiply by 100. Thus, (162/13,527)(100) = 1.2%, to the nearest tenth, were education mentions.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Obama: (642/7934)(100) = 8.09%

McCain: (509/5593)(100) = 9.10%

McCain has made a higher percentage of health care “mentions.”

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Iraq War: (5805/13,527)(100) = 42.914%

Economy/Budget: (3330/13,527)(100) = 24.617%

42.914 – 24.617 = 18.3%, to the nearest tenth.
