President's Message
by Sharon Parkinson, PE
I would like to thank everyone for the opportunity to serve as your 2001-2002 State President. This newsletter is a bit late in coming out to the membership, but we thought it to be important enough to highlight some of the exciting things we have done this year in addition to discussing what is being planned for the coming year.

Sometime back we developed our ISPE Vision Statement:
"The Idaho Society of Professional Engineers (ISPE) will be the selected engineering society by Idaho professional engineers to promote engineering and public awareness and provide advocacy and networking."

Included with that is the ISPE Mission Statement:
"ISPE is the Idaho state society of engineering professionals from all disciplines that promotes the ethical and competent practice of engineering, advocates licensure, and enhances the image and well-being of its members."

As a society, our goals are to promote the field of engineering, professionalism, ethical conduct, and to help the society grow and prosper for the benefit of all engineering disciplines. What we would like to carry forward with next year is a strategy to promote the Vision and Mission Statements as well as what it means to be a member of ISPE. We have a great opportunity to work with NSPE, utilize the resources they have made available to us, and to go forward with a plan.

Recently, Annette Petrick, President of Petrick Outsourcing, Inc. has contracted with NSPE to become the NSPE Membership Initiative Consultant and help each state society promote membership. Annette recently worked with our state leadership to help us develop ideas to promote ISPE. In addition, she will have a complete development plan prepared in June for the ISPE board to vote on. We will make the proposal available on our website as soon as we receive it. I look forward to her proposal as I believe this will be a tremendous tool to the leadership and current members of ISPE for focusing our initial efforts in promoting membership growth in concert with the goals of our society. I recognize how precious time can be for everyone in a volunteer society, and I want to thank those who have helped so much this last year and those who continue to offer their support in carrying these initiatives forward.

President Elect's Message
by Cliff Roberts, PE
For your information, here are some of the things we will be considering in upcoming months:
bulletProfessional Engineering Licensure: new licensure models are under consideration; included are continuing professional competency (continuing education) requirements.
bulletISPE Membership. There are approximately 2,622 registered professional engineers and engineers-in-training residing in Idaho - only 350 of us (13 percent) are members of ISPE. One-on-one interaction is the key to attract new members. If you know a prospective member, get them a membership kit. Or, let us know and we will send it to them.
bulletEngineering Image. Engineers Week, including the Young Engineer of the Year Award, the Engineering Hall of Fame, and the Excellence in Engineering Award, promote recognition of engineers and engineering. ISPE organizes and sponsors MATHCOUNTS which recognizes skilled young people who will become tomorrows teachers and engineers. ISPE scholarships may be offered in the future, after we escape our budget deficit.
bullet2003 Annual Convention. We are investigating a combination CEI / ISPE annual convention and other convention enhancements. The 2003 convention time and place are currently under consideration.

We want your input. If you have some good ideas, if you want to volunteer, or if you have any questions, contact your State or Local ISPE Board members at ispe@rmci.net or by telephone at 208-426-0636.
