MATHCOUNTS

by Jim Reppell, PE

ISPE volunteers hosted 70 junior high school students and their coaches on Saturday, March 8th at the Idaho State MATHCOUNTS Competition. The competition, which was held at BSU’s engineering school, provided the mathletes with some pretty challenging problems. (I know our volunteers were scratching their heads on some of them.) The students competed for team and individual championships. Here are the results:

Team

1st Place North Junior High School Boise

2nd Place Rocky Mountain Middle School Idaho Falls

3rd Place Jenifer Junior High School Lewiston

4th Place Moscow Junior High School Moscow

Individual

1st Place Luke Maher North Junior High School

2nd Place Kyle Antonini North Junior High School

3rd Place Alex Mentch Sacajawea Junior High School (Lewiston)

4th Place Amanda Baker Foothills School (Boise)

Luke, Kyle, Alex, and Amanda will represent Idaho in the national competition in Chicago on May 9th. Their coach will be Mike Lehosit of the winning North team. In addition, these four students each received a $1,000 scholarship to the state engineering school of their choice, thanks to a nice collaboration between BSU, ISU, and U of I.

Thanks to all the ISPE members throughout the state who volunteered to help in the MATHCOUNTS program this year!

State Treasurer’s Report

by J. Canning, PE/LS

The ISPE is approximately three-quarters through our current fiscal year. This report will cover our financial status through 1 April 2003. Before beginning we want to thank Larry Bennett for his work in completing the review of our financial records for ISPE and the ISPE Foundation. Larry’s review and report was thorough and concise. All is well in our bookkeeping, thanks to Julie Wall. Thanks, Larry and Julie!

Now on with the boring, but important, number stuff.

Receipts so far this year total $44,423.50. This includes $1,452.58 reimbursement from our NSPE Membership Development fund. Our income exceeds our budgeted amount of $40,010.00. The highlights are receipts from the annual meeting/convention and from our sustaining organization program. Sustaining organizations have contributed $3,420.00. Member dues are very close to budget amounts. The annual meeting/convention generated $16,327.23. We are currently at 111% of budgeted income for the year. Additional income during the remainder of the year will be next to nothing.

Expenses have totaled $38,618.41. This is 82.5% of the year’s projected expenses. A little high for approximately 75% of the year gone by, but the annual meeting/convention is completed. All budget categories appear to be where they should be for the year.

Our current checking account balance is $26,407.86. Our current saving account balance is $4,016.94. Our active certificate of deposit is $4,689.09. Cash assets total $35,113.89.
