THE IDAHO FUTURE CITY COMPETITION NEEDS YOU!
The fourth annual Idaho Future City Competition is picking up a head of steam this fall. We have 24 teams already signed up and hoping for five or ten more teams. We have been very successful in bringing this educational program to middle school students in Idaho thanks to your generous support and help.

Right now, we have six middle schools that would like to participate in the Idaho Future City Competition, but need an engineer mentor to work with their team. These schools are as follows:

Sandpoint Charter - Sandpoint
Sacajawea Jr. High School - Lewiston
Collister Elementary - Boise
Meridian Middle - Meridian
West Middle School - Nampa
Lakes Middle School - Coeur D'Alene

If you are or someone that you know/work with might be interested, please contact Bill Holder (wholder@stratageotech.com) or Lynn Olson (lolson@toengrco.com). We can get you more information and/or hook you up with one of these teams. If there is a school closer to you that you would like to work with, we can also help you with recruitment to bring them on board.

Information on the Future City Competition and Mentor Responsibilities
The Future City Competition is an educational program for 7th and 8th grade students where they design a city using SimCity software, build a scale model of a portion of the city, write a brief essay, and give a presentation on their city to a panel of engineer judges. The students must incorporate engineering decision making into their city design. An engineer mentor works with the team during preparation for the competition. Typically engineer mentors work with the students for about one to two hours twice a month. Engineering students, registered professional engineers, people with an engineering degree and practicing engineering in the private or public sector, or retired engineers can be engineer mentors.

If mentoring does not fit you, then we also need volunteers to assist with judging, school recruitment, and competition logistics. You can find out more about the Idaho Future City Competition at www.futurecityidaho.org or the national competition at www.futurecity.org.

Thanks in advance for your continued support and volunteer help.

FUTURE CITY INFORMATION SESSION
The first of two information sessions on the National Engineers Week Idaho Regional Future City Competition will be held next Wednesday, September 19th at Boise State University. The approximately one hour session will last from 6-7 pm in room MEC106 of the Micron Engineering Center. See the map for directions. Please come if you are interested in learning more about this program and how you can become involved as an engineer mentor and judge for this year's competition.

Also if you are interested in joining the Future City Steering Committee to help assist in organizing this great program, there are openings in all areas from fundraising to engineer, school and other volunteer recruitment. Please contact Lynn Olson (lolson@toengrco.com or 323-1578 ext. 255) with any questions. Thanks again for ISPE's support of Future Cities and hope to see you there!

MATHCOUNTS PROBLEM OF THE WEEK
Can you solve this MATHCOUNTS problem? The answer will appear in next week's edition of the Friday Update!

Making The Grade
To calculate Stanley’s GPA his school assigns points to each final semester grade he earns and then averages all of his grades together. In his school, an “A” is worth 4 points, a “B” is worth 3 points, a “C” is worth 2 points, a “D” is worth 1 point and an “F” is worth 0 points. After the first day of class Stanley thinks he will end up with “A”s in English, Math, and Gym, and “B”s in Science and History for the semester. If his guesses are accurate, what will his GPA be for the semester? Assume that the GPA is un-weighted. Express your answer as a decimal to the nearest tenth.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On Jordan’s first day of school her math teacher hands out a syllabus and tells her that it outlines how many tests, quizzes and projects she’ll have during the first quarter and how much of her grade each item is worth. When she opens up her syllabus she finds that she has 3 tests, 6 quizzes and 2 projects! Upon reading further, Jordan finds that the value of each test is equivalent to the value of two quizzes and the value of each project is equivalent to the value of 1.5 tests. Assuming there are no other contributing factors to her grade, what fraction of her grade is determined by each project? Express your answer as a common fraction.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In another class, later in the quarter, Jordan had an average score of 89 points on the first 4 quizzes. When the lowest quiz score is dropped the average of her remaining three test scores goes up to a 94 points. What was the score of the dropped test?

Answer to last week’s MATHCOUNTS problem:
Calculate the total cost of the items at each location.

Supply Central is the least expensive.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

First find total cost of the sale prices of the items on your list.

$2.51 + $1.39 + $3.00 + $0.69 + $0.69 + $1.83 (2) + $1.59 (5) + $1.75 + $4.63 + $2.63 + $3.19 (2) = $33.92

Find the sum of the sale items at their regular prices

$3.59 + $1.99 + $4.29 + $0.99 + $0.99 + $2.29 (2) + $2.19 + $1.99 (5) + $5.79 + $3.29 + $3.99 (2) = $45.63

Subtract the regular price total from the sale price total.

$45.63 - $33.92 = $11.71

Divide the difference by the regular price total and multiply by 100.

$11.71 ๗ 45.63 = 0.256629… ื 100 = 25.7%, rounded to the tenths place.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Find the total price of the items purchased before tax

$2.51 + $1.39 + $3.00 + $0.69 + $0.69 = $8.28

Find the difference between the cost of the items before and your total price with tax.

$8.74 - $8.28 = $0.46

Divide the difference by the cost of the items before tax and multiply by 100.

$0.46๗$8.28 = 0.05555…  ื 100 = 5.6% to the nearest tenth

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Find the sum of the prices of the sale items.

$1.83 (2) + $1.59 (5) + $1.75 + $4.63 + $2.63 + $3.19 (2) = $27.00

Calculate the dollar value of taxes to be paid by multiplying the sum by the decimal form of the sales tax percentage.

($27.00)(0.055) = $1.49 to the nearest cent

Now add the tax to the sum of the prices of the items.

$27.00 + $1.49 = $28.49
