MATHCOUNTS
by Jim Reppell, PE
Things slow down a bit for the MATHCOUNTS program in the summer, but there has
been some activity. The national competition was held May 9th in Chicago. For
the first time, it was televised! ESPN2 broadcast it several times in June and
July. Hopefully, many of you were able to see it. The Idaho team did not finish
at the top, but they represented us well.
All of last year’s chapter and state coordinators agreed to do it again this
year. They are a great, capable group, but they would be glad to get your help.
Anyone interested in getting involved in MATHCOUNTS is invited to contact one of
the coordinators. Our contact information is on the ISPE web site at
www.IdahoSPE.org. Just click on the MATHCOUNTS icon.
The other area of summer activity is school and teacher recruitment. We’ll be
presenting information on MATHCOUNTS in July at Edufest, a regional conference
at BSU on gifted and talented education, and in August at the Idaho Math Academy
in Moscow. The academy is a state program for middle school math teachers (our
target market). Hopefully these efforts will pay off in increased school
registrations.
ISPE Foundation
by Jim Reppell, PE
The ISPE Foundation is looking to fill a few empty positions on the board of
directors. The board is presently at its minimum allowed number of directors,
and would like to increase its membership. All ISPE members are eligible to
apply. The bylaws require that the board have a member from each ISPE chapter,
which we presently have. We’d like to add one additional director from each
chapter to assure chapter representation and allow member rotation. The board
meets twice a year and the duties are pretty light. If you are interested,
please contact Julie at the ISPE office.
State Treasurer’s Report
by J. Canning, PE/LS
The ISPE has completed its fiscal
year as of 30 June 2002. This report will cover our financial status through the
end of the 2002-2003 fiscal year.
The great news is that instead of matching our proposed budget bottom line of
losing $6,780.00 (in the red), we came out with a surplus of $4,572.67! What a
deal! That’s a swing of over $11,000.00. More good news is that we did not make
up the difference in cutting our expenses - our expenses slightly exceeded our
projected expenses. Folks the difference was made up in our income - a whopping
$12,000.00 more than we had projected! There were three primary reasons for this
great situation:
Our membership saw the need for our recent nominal increase in annual dues and
did not cancel their membership as we had feared
Our annual meeting at the Holiday Inn was a great financial success (if you
missed the luncheon with guest speaker Coach Dan Hawkins, you missed one of the
best we have had in years)
Our sustaining member organizations continue to grow and contribute
Now on with the boring, but important, number stuff.
Total receipts for the year totaled $51,979.09, 129.9% of the budgeted amount.
This included $3,420.00 from our sustaining member organizations, 136.8% of the
budgeted amount (it just keeps growing)! Income exceeded our budgeted amount of
$40,010.00. Member dues were $24,262.50, 112.0% of the budgeted amount. The
annual meeting/convention generated $16,147.23, 161.5% of the budgeted amount.
Expenses totaled $47,406.42. This was 101.3% of the year’s projected expenses.
Our checking account balance is $25,175.44. Our saving account balance is
$4,021.99. Our active certificate of deposit is $4,720.71. Cash assets for the
end of the year were $33,918.14.
Congratulations to each of you for helping us see significant black ink for the
first time in a few years. Your leadership hopes to continue this trend into the
future.
