CONNECTION

Winter 2002 Edition

President's Message
by Cliff Roberts, PE

On behalf of ISPE, I would like to wish everyone Happy Holidays! It's a busy time of year and a time to be thankful for many things. At ISPE, we are especially thankful for all the volunteers that have been busy serving on ISPE committees, including the MATHCOUNTS Program, Convention, Awards, Nominations, Membership, Continuing Professional Development, and ISPE Management Structure Committees. Central to all the committees' efforts is the upcoming 2003 Convention, a joint event sponsored by ISPE and the Consulting Engineers of Idaho (CEI). Additional Convention information, including a registration form, is included in this publication. The Convention is scheduled for February 2003 - earlier than usual - and all Committee members are working hard towards completing their tasks in time. The MATHCOUNTS Program, chaired by Jim Reppell, is gearing up for the 2003 MATHCOUNTS competitions. The Awards Committee, chaired by Bill Ancell, is seeking candidates for Young Engineer of the Year, Engineering Hall of Fame, and Excellence in Engineering. The Nominations Committee, chaired by Sharon Parkinson, is seeking nominations for ISPE Junior Regional Director, ISPE President-Elect, and the Idaho Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. The Membership Committee, chaired by Stephen Loop, is exploring ways to attract new members and enhance membership value. The Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Committee, chaired by yours truly, is exploring aspects of a CPD program that may appeal to Idaho professional engineers (refer to our web site http://home.rmci.net/ispe/ for results of the August 2002 CPD survey). The ISPE Management Structure Committee, chaired by Karen Doherty, is exploring enhancements to the ISPE Management Structure. Thanks to all of you, including all Chapter officers and volunteers, who have been expending time and energy towards achieving the goals of ISPE. Thanks also to Doug Camenisch for orchestrating the production of this newsletter and special thanks to Julie Wall for putting things all together and keeping everyone in line. I wish you and your family a Happy Holiday Season!

President-Elect's Message
by Karen Doherty, PE

Member Pride - ISPE is embarking on a campaign to increase gratification in our membership. We have been allotted $3,500 from NSPE for activities related to this campaign and want your input about how to constructively utilize these funds. We funded the "new" membership certificates from the grant money and will be utilizing it for newsletter production as well. Remember - ISPE is YOUR organization and we want your input. Please contact me at (208) 336-0420 or by email at kdoherty@dohertyeng.com to give input on activities. Please contact any other board members as well. And remember, it doesn't take long to ask a friend to join you for lunch at an ISPE meeting…share your enthusiasm about our organization with others! Here are a few things to keep in mind:
bulletOther organizations represent what you do. ISPE represents who you are.
bulletISPE is where leadership is taught, learned and practiced. ISPE does not create engineers. It creates engineering leaders.
bulletYou do not have to be a licensed PE to join! Practicing engineers should be graduates of an ABET-accredited engineering program. Students currently studying in this program are also eligible.
bulletThose who went before gave back so you could prosper and earn. Now it's our turn to put in time, give back, prepare and mentor the next generation of engineers.

January and February are busy months for our organization with focus on MATHCOUNTS, National Engineers Week, and our State Convention. Please continue to show your support by volunteering to serve our organization.

Best wishes this Holiday Season.
Karen Doherty, PE
