MATHCOUNTS PROBLEM OF THE WEEK
Can you solve this MATHCOUNTS problem? The answer will appear in next week's edition of the Friday Update!

Superbowl
The date for the 41st National Football League Superbowl is February 4, 2007.  Superbowl I was held on January 15, 1967.  The Green Bay Packers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs.  The sum of the number of points each team scored was 45 and the difference of the number of points each team scored was 25.  How many points did each team score?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The scores for Superbowls XXXVI through XL are shown in the table below.

XXXVI

New England    20

St. Louis        17

XXXVII

Tampa Bay       48

Oakland         21

XXXVIII

New England    32

Carolina         29

XXXIX

New England    24

Philadelphia    21

XL

Pittsburgh         21

Seattle           10

What is the positive difference between the mean of the winning scores and the mean of the losing scores?  Express your answer as a decimal to the nearest tenth.

What is the positive difference between the median of the winning scores and the median of the losing scores?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The cost of a 30-second commercial for Superbowl I in 1967 was $42,000.  The cost for a 30-second commercial for Superbowl XLI in 2007 is $2,600,000.  How many complete 30-second commercials could have been purchased for Superbowl I with the same amount of money needed to purchase one 30-second commercial for Superbowl XLI?

Answer to last week’s MATHCOUNTS problem:
The least possible sum is from January 1, 2007, (1/1/07) 1 + 1 + 7 = 9.  The greatest possible sum is from January 31, 2007, (1/31/07) 1 + 31 + 7 = 39.  Check the number of factors for each integer from 9 through 39.  The positive integer in that range with the greatest number of factors is 36.  The date is January 28, 2007, (1/28/07).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The volume of the ice and branch minus the volume of the branch equals the volume of the ice.  ((3cm)2 Χ π Χ 100cm) – ((0.5cm)2 Χ π Χ 100cm) = 875 Χ π = 2748.89cm3.    (2748.89cm3) Χ (1gm/cm3)  Χ (1kg/1000gm) = 2.7 kg.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The visible part of the iceberg is a hemisphere and has 10% of the volume of the iceberg.  Let V represent the volume of the iceberg.  (((4 Χ π Χ (2.5m)3) χ 3 )  χ 2) = 0.1 Χ V V = 327.25 m3.  The total volume of the iceberg is 327 m3
